What Are The Different Treatment Options For Snoring?

Noisy breathing during sleep is quite prevalent. Studies reveal that 20% of young adults are snorers. Moving up the age scale, this ratio goes as high as six in every ten, highlighting the susceptibility of seniors to this problem. Snoring can lead to long-term sleep deprivation, fatigue, and consequently problems in terms of productivity. Snoring can also put one at risk of suffering from a myriad of health issues, increased blood pressure and cardiovascular disorders being some of them.

Fortunately, snoring is manageable, and surgery isn’t typically prescribed unless all other conservative measures have proven ineffective. There are several simple remedies for snoring, and most of them can be done at home. First is to assume a side-lying position during sleep.

This is because sleeping on one’s back presses your chin against your sternum, effectively obstructing your air passage. Back sleepers who can’t maintain a side lying position can instead make use of snoring pillows. The contours in these snoring pillows keeps the head and neck aligned, keeping the chin off the chest which makes the airway narrow during sleep.

A commonly prescribed anti-snoring device is a mandibular advancement splint. Just remember to get one that fits snugly onto your teeth to prevent injury to surrounding areas and for maximum efficacy and comfort. It works by moving the lower jaw forward slightly, tightening the soft tissues and muscles of the upper airway thereby preventing it from getting obstructed during sleep. These implements jut your mandible a few centimeters frontward and by doing so prevent the soft palate and other soft tissues around it from collapsing while you’re slumbering. Anti-snoring chin straps can also be used and they are designed specifically for mouth breathers. Anti-snoring chin straps decreases the severity of your snoring problem by keeping your mouth shut while you’re asleep, thereby retraining you to breathe through your nose.

The main criticism of these various anti-snoring implements is that their efficacy is basically limited to the time when you are actually using them. Meaning, your will likely snore again once you don’t use them. Lifestyle modifications can bring about results which are more sustained. For example, if you are a bit on the heavy side, you can get rid of snoring by losing some weight. Exercising can reduce the amount of fatty tissue around the neck area which makes you airway narrower. Mouth breathers usually suffer from nasal stuffiness. Dealing with that congestion will reduce snoring effectively. Then again, it would be unwise to self-medicate as some medications can cause the muscles in your airway to relax which will just make your snoring worse.

Refrain from drinking alcoholic beverages at least four hours prior to hitting the sack. Like certain medications, alcoholic beverages exert a depressive effect, making the muscles around your throat more relaxed. Lastly, visit your doctor to rule out other underlying disorders that causes you to snore.
