Even before you could start painting, choose a color scheme for the walls. Most of the painting styles, use two shades on one color for any design. Incidentally, if you also choose a pattern that has two shades, pick your base coat shade darker than usual, as when you give the lighter top coat the base coat will become lighter making the final result lighter.

To sponge or rag a wall, paint on your base color and let it dry thoroughly. Dip your sponge or rag in the top coat shade then and sponge or drag it across until you like the result. Keep repeating the procedure until the entire wall is done.

If you are thinking about using a more advanced decorative painting technique such as stenciling or stamping, you might just need to give a wall paper effect usingstamping or stenciling a simple design over your base coat. However, you may want to go a step further with your project and use stencils or stamps to create a faux brick or stone wall do the following. First, coat your walls with the color of your pick for the mortar between the bricks or stones. Once the base coat is dry, stamp or stencil your bricks or stones over the base coat. After the brick or stonework is dry, spatter a bit of the darker color over your faux art as it renders it depth and makes it look more real.Creating faux effects like giving the look to your wall like it’s made off plaster or suede can also really make your room stand out. Some paint bases give the look of suede or textured effect naturally, which a method even artists use these days.
