Learning PIano – Finding Middle C On The Keyboard

Middle C – What Exactly is it?

Middle C is quite literally the middle C key on your piano. It’s the first key you most often learn as a beginner and is an easy reference point for the area of the keyboard many popular songs start.

How to Find it on a Keyboard or Piano

The location of middle C on a piano is the 4th C from the left hand side. On a piano if you know your note locations and steps then you can count from the left: the 1st C is the 3rd key, the 2nd C is the 10th key and so on every 7 keys is a C until you hit the fourth one. Middle C therefore is the 24th white key in from the left hand side.

When using an electric keyboard the location will vary pending the number of white keys. If you keyboard has 88 keys then it’s still the 4th C but if you have a 76, 61 or 49 key keyboard it’s the 3rd C. You can find the C the same way by counting up from the left hand side.

To memorize the position of middle C note how many black key sets precede it. Use those black key groupings to remember and location middle C quickly.
