He will be able to suggest a good beginner’s flute for you. You also have the option of just renting a flute, see if you really want to play it.
The second step will be to assemble the flute and tune it. As for assembling there will be a manual with the flute, if not ask for some manual at the store or just find some online manuals. The flute is not really that complicated to assemble, just be sure to follow carefully the instructions on the manual to prevent damaging your instrument. As for tuning it is done with a metronome, you can buy/rent one or use a digital metronome on your PC if you have a good ear for music.
After these two steps, you will have an assembled and tuned flute and you can move over to playing.
Get some flute basics
There are three main basics in playing the flute – breathing, posture and position of the flute. Going into details will fill a whole book, so we’ll just go into the important points. To practice the right way of blowing, take a bottle and try to blow across the opening to get a sound. Blowing into the flute will be similar, so practice a while with a bottle to get the idea. Then take a flute, place your lower lip on the lip panel and try to get a sound from the flute.
Positioning the flute is really easy. Once you have correctly positioned the flute on your lips, the instrument must angle a little to your right. The left hand will hold the flute part that is closer to you. Place the thumb under the flute so that the four other fingers will be positioned to reach the open keys on top. Cover the rest of the keys with your right hand, turned from you.
Sitting or standing it doesn’t matter. Proper playing posture is body straight, shoulders back, and head help up high to allow for better air circulation. Flute must be held at an angle and slightly pointing downward. Being relaxed while playing also will help you play beautifully. The moment you feel tingling in your hands or legs, or feel them getting numb then it’s time to change position.
In addition to the basics you will also need a song to play. You can search the internet for flute music pieces and you will find many that will be good for beginners to practice. And of course make sure that you can read the notes.
