For some people, the idea of learning the guitar is scary one. It just looks like there is so much to take in, that you’d never have time to learn it all. Playing techniques, scales, chords, and the theory behind it all add up to what seems like too much to take in. The truth is however, that with the right guidance, learning the guitar isn’t nearly as difficult as some people think. People learn the guitar for a variety of different reasons. Some people want to make it as a pro, and have a long and successful career. Many people dream of writing they own, original compositions. Sometimes, people just want to be able to play along to their favourite songs. Regardless of your reasons though, I can assure you that you will enjoy the challenge of learning the guitar, and if you’re willing to put in the effort, you’ll reap the rewards of becoming a great player.

The very first thing you need to decide is weather to play acoustic or electric guitar. The sort of music you most want to learn will usually be the deciding factor here. Electric guitars can be a bit easier to play than acoustics due to their lighter strings, but they do require additional equipment, like leads and an amp. Acoustics have the advantage of being able to be played, and heard anywhere.

Once you’ve got a guitar, you can either get lessons from a professional tutor, or teach yourself using books, videos, or other resources. If you enlist the help of a tutor it will clearly be more costly than learning on your own, but you will have somebody to show you exactly what to do. Teaching yourself is cheaper, and can be great if you can stay disciplines, but it easy to develop bad habits, and incorrect playing techniques when learning this way.

The first thing you’ll want to learn, whether you’re teaching yourself, or having lessons, is how to play some basic chords.Strumming chords provides the back bone of a large amount of music for the guitar. Being able to play a few chords accurately and cleanly will enable you to start playing some of your favourite songs straight away.

There is only really one way to become a great guitar play, and that is  practice. However, there is practice, and then there’s practice. If you practise incorrectly you can end up wasting a lot of time, whereas correct, effective, and efficient practice can drastically reduce your leaning time. You should always aim to play and practise things as cleanly and as accurately as possible. You should try to play every note in accurately, using a metronome to keep in time.
