Any kind of instrument which produces a sound, is known as a musical instrument. There are many different instruments producing all kinds of sounds. Some instruments can even be dated all the way back to the origins of music.

Each individual music instrument has its own qualities. These qualities pertain to pitch, melody, range, chords, and so on. The instrument is also placed into a special category based on these qualities.

Wind instruments are those instruments that produces sound using column of air that vibrates inside of the instrument and thus produces sound. The frequency of the sound wave that is generated depends on the column of the air length as well as the shape while the quality of the sound or tone depends on the construction as well as the method for the production of tone adopted.

Wind instruments are sub-categorized into woodwinds and brass. Typical wind instruments would include that of the bassoon, horn, flute, oboes, and clarinets.

Percussion instruments are those that produce sound upon striking something. The shape, material, resonating cavity or the part struck defines the type of sound produced. Some percussion musical instruments include the snare drum, cymbals, bells, xylophone, timpani and gong chime, timpani.

The strings are another group of musical instruments. They include cellos, violins, violas, etc… The sound produced by these instruments is made when a vibration is produced; typically by the musician running a wood bow over the string itself.

The guitar, banjo, and lute are also included in the string instrument category. So as you can see, there are many options for you to choose from if you so wish to play a stringed instrument.

Another category is keyboard instruments that produce music using musical keyboard. All the keys produce different sounds furthermore most of the keyboards instruments have extra features that allows manipulation of these sounds. These instruments can produce sound by wind, strings vibration, electronic means and many other ways.

Electronic instruments are those that produce sound using electrical means. They imitate other instruments in designs in particular the keyboards.

Brass instruments are used in orchestras and gatherings the world over. The sound is produced when the musician blows air through the instrument. The sound is controlled by valves on the instrument.

Musical instruments are categorized according to their playing level of the instruments and the sounds they produce. Some of these instruments are suitable for use by anyone while some are for only beginners. You can buy these instruments online as well or from the market.
