7 Ways to Take the Best Digital Wedding Photography
Digital cameras offer users and professionals a mostly infallible method of capturing scores of images during a wedding day. Sadly there are a many common mistakes that mean a photographer misses great opportunities or gets into difficulty when using their cameras for photographing a wedding.
Below are seven tips to use when planning any sort of digital wedding photography, and while some are “common sense” they have made the list because they are often issues that are simply overlooked.
1. Remember to bring a backup battery – while this may seem obvious the sad fact is that many amateur or first time photographers forget how quickly their camera’s battery can fade while taking photo after photo. This is especially true for photographers who must use their LCD screen to compose and review their shots. If at all possible take spare, fully charged batteries and keep them with you at all times!
2. Ssssshhhh – there is no way the bride, groom, wedding party or guest wants to hear distracting “beeps” or “boops” while trying to enjoy the ceremony. While many weddings will not allow flash photography, a thoughtful photographer could use ambient lighting along with their camera’s settings to get good pictures of the ceremony, but even without using the flash they may still be annoying if the camera is making noises.
3. Go RAW – if a camera allows RAW, this could be a great way to capture some of the best digital wedding photography possible. This setting requires a very large amount of memory, but it allows for much more flexibility and can make the difference between several great photos of the ceremony and none at all!
4. Continuous shooting – digital wedding photography demands many pictures to be taken quite quickly and the refresh time on most cameras is just too slow for the speed of such events. If you are able, set the camera to “continuous” mode.
5. Using that zoom – one of the great things about digital wedding photography is that the equipment is often tiny but loaded with great capabilities. As an example, a thoughtful photographer may be able to catch the smaller details, such as rings, the emotions of the happy couple, and even the flowers with the powerful zoom lenses available in most modern cameras.
6. Have a spare? – most digital wedding photography asks a lot of the flash, battery and memory of a camera. If a photographer has additional memory cards, batteries or a backup camera it is a great idea to bring it all to such an important event as a wedding.
7. Understand the flash – during those times when flash photography is acceptable, an image can be enhanced by the use of “flash fill” and digital wedding photography allows this to be easily done. The camera can detect, even in the midday sun if the image will benefit from the flash, and this should be used to ensure the best images possible.
Using these seven tips and tricks, your digital wedding photography will be a total success!
