Best Christmas Movies for 2008

If you’re looking for a movie to get yourself or your family into the holiday spirit, these are 10 guaranteed top picks when it comes to Holiday Movies:

10 – A Christmas Carol (Various Versions)
Based on Charles Dickens’ novel, A Christmas Carol tells the tale of a grumpy broker named Ebeneezer Scrooge, who’s only emotion towards the Holiday season is “Bam-Humbug!” His miserable, cold attitude is reversed when three ghosts visit him and warn him of his impending lonely death. Can Ebeneezer change his substandard ways in time to celebrate Christmas the right way?

9 – Elf (2003)
I’m not usually a Will Ferrell fan, to be quite frank, I find him and his characters annoying. I actually saw this film for the first time this year, at a friend’s house. I was surprised to find myself laughing at “Buddy’s” antics, and also a little touched to see how his childlike enthusiasm worked magic on the others around him. Besides, it actually is fun to watch a really tall guy wearing a ridiculous looking green suit and tights running around New York City. I guess I’ll have to make an exception and let Elf schmaltz into my holidays from now on, although it’s not really one to share with younger kids.

8 – The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
I am a big Tim Burton fan, and any film that can be watched for two holidays gets a thumbs up from me. I pull this one out at Halloween and we play it till New Year’s. The songs are great, the quirky characters are lovable in their own twisted ways, and I can’t think of any other film that has Santa Claus being questioned by a giant gambling ghost. Gets me in the Christmas spirit – pun intended.

7 – National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (1989)
The cast of “Vacation” returns as the Griswold family prepares for a big family Christmas. The well-intentioned family makes a total disaster of the holiday, ruining everything they touch. A comic gem.

6 – Bad Santa (2003) starring Billy Bob Thornton
Do I really want to admit I like this film? Thornton’s character has a dubious plan to rob a department store by dressing like Santa. He then proceeds on a crazy spree including getting drunk, beating up little kids, and cursing throughout. It may not sound like it, but there is a goodwill message hidden somewhere within. Yeah, this is not a family film – but it is pretty funny.

5 – Scrooged (1988) starring Bill Murray
Back when Bill Murray was still funny (meaning pre- “Lost in Translation”) he made this gem of a film. I especially love Carol Kane’s performance as the ghost of Christmas Present, and yes, it’s still kind of fun to laugh at what we thought was stylish in the 80s. The story is, of course, Dicken’s Christmas Carol – but with many more wisecracks.

4 – The Santa Clause (1994) starring Tim Allen
When Santa is killed, divorced father Scott Calvin is recruited to take his place and complete his Christmas rounds. Scott believes it’s all a dream, until he begins to morph into the jolly old man, much to the delight of his six-year old son Charlie.

3 – Miracle on 34th Street (1947) starring Maureen O’Hara
A kind, bearded old man is put on trial for calling himself Kris Kringle and believing that he is the real Santa. A holiday blockbuster that appeals to the believer in all of us.

2 – It’s a Wonderful Life (1946)
Life is falling apart for George Bailey and he begins to contemplate suicide, when his guardian angel appears to show how life would have been if he never existed. A timeless Jimmy Stewart classic that shows anything is possible with the love of friends and family.

This leads us to the number one Christmas movie to watch in 2008:

1 – A Christmas Story (1983)
Probably the most popular Christmas movie ever made, A Christmas Story is a tale of a young boy, Ralphie, who wants nothing more than a Red Ryder BB rifle for Christmas. Does Ralphie ever get his one and only wish? Bunny outfits, leg lamps, and “You’ll shoot your eye out, kid!” will keep you laughing until next Christmas.

There you have it, the Top Ten Christmas Movies of 2008! Throw another log on the fire and get to watching these timeless movies.

The first thing you will need to consider is your choice of guitar. A good starter guitar to learn from is the acoustic. Many people go into this wanting to learn the eclectic guitar, and end up disappointed that they need to learn the acoustic first. You don't have to do it that way, but the acoustic makes learning other type of guitars easier. Like most, I recommend you learn how to play acoustic guitar first.

Once you have your acoustic guitar you will need to learn how to hold it and where to put your fingers. You should consider purchasing some training DVDs and books that show you how to go about doing this.

Learning how to hold the guitar is fairly straightforward, but will take a little practice. Once you got that down then you can go ahead and learn some basic cord shapes and strumming. This is really the easy stuff.

Once you have learned the easy stuff you should work on the technique, the fundamentals, and some music theory. It's very important that you practice this stuff as much as you can. The more bad habits you pick up the harder it will be to get rid of them.

Once you have the basics under control you can move towards the style of your choice. If you want to learn metal then you should start working your way towards that. Start things off by picking some easy to learn rock songs and then work towards ones that get harder. The same would apply to playing blues or country.

Always keep on practicing. Mastering an instrument takes a very serious time investment. Your going to need to try to practice a little each and everyday. This really is the best way to get good at playing guitar.

You may want to consider learning to play by ear. This used to be a talent that only a few special people were born with. Now even a normal person can learn how to do this. There are some really good courses that you can learn from.
